    • Wow what a Weekend

Posted in News on September 29th, 2007

This Saturday is amazing with all that is happening.  If there isn’t something to strike your fancy, I’d be amazed.

Memphis Youth Theatre performs at 10 am at Playhouse On The Square “a pay what you can” rendition of “Stinky cheese Man.”  They’ll reprise it next Saturday at 1:00 pm at the Pink Palace Crafts Fair.

Girl Scout Troop 3 is hosting a garden party in honor of the 95th anniversary of scouting at 10:30 in the garden.  The closest living relative to Juliet Lowe scoutings founder will be their guest (this is quite a big deal)

Blue grass will be playing from noon to 3 and will also play for the garden party.

Nubian Theatre is practicing and will be presenting the Doxology and The Lord’s prayer in liturgical dance tomorrow in church.

Street Car Named  Desire is at 8 with its second night of performance - Again tomorrow at 2 and then next weekend Fri, Sat and Sun.

Poetry, Rhythm, jazz and Soul is also at 8 in the fellowship hall.  This is always inspirational.

Tomorrow morning (Sunday) Ashley Keith Davis joins Gary as a musician.  He is an amazing keyboarder, organist, pianist, etc who is so skilled he can go from Bach to Bethoven to anything in the hymnal to R & B, blues, and black gospel.  Church should be amazing.

Local Swing Dance Group Hits the Scene

Red Hot Lindy Hop is coming to Cooper-Young! Operating as a non-profit, the group’s efforts are aimed at promoting the education and preservation of vintage swing dances in the Memphis area. They are very excited about the opportunity to take advantage of a new venue, Galloway Church, located at 1015 S. Cooper St. in Midtown, Memphis. “Coming to Cooper-Young for swing dances and classes is a wonderful opportunity for us.

As a group of people who try to be inventive on and off the dance floor, this neighborhood is the perfect environment to foster our creative natures,” says Sarah Beth Larson, who has been swing dancing for just a year. Classes will be held every Thursday at 7pm and 8pm, for only $14 per 2-week session. Every 2nd and 4th Thursday, the organization will host dances featuring both local and out-of-town DJs.

Lindy Hop is a swing dance with a rich history dating back to the mid 1930’s, when dancers began to break away from the closeness and formality of ballroom dances. Jazz music was exploding onto the scene and a swing dance craze swept the nation. Along with the Lindy Hop, the group teaches lessons in Charleston, Collegiate Shag, Balboa, and East Coast Swing dancing. As previously stated, Red Hot Lindy Hop is especially interested in growing the swing dance scene in Memphis. They welcome all people to lessons, whether they have ever danced a step or are a seasoned professional.

Becky Spain, a local dance teacher, had this to say: “I love swing dancing because I can walk into an event and see every ethnicity, form of diversity, and age group represented. I also have something in common with every other person in the room, no matter how long each of us has been involved with dance.” Red Hot Lindy Hop was launched in April of 2005, when a few dancers who shared one great love of swing came together to help spread the joy of this abounding style of dance. “The connection to the jazz music and the people I dance with is amazing. Teaching swing dance gives me the opportunity to help others share this extraordinary experience and allows me to share my love for dancing,” says Jaredan Braal, president and co-founder of Red Hot Lindy Hop.

Visit the Red Hot Lindy Hop website for information on classes, dances, venues, and to sign up for SwingOutMemphis, a public e-mail group used to post dance events, live bands, and gatherings. See you on the dance floor!
